A fiery and lengthy debate over the controversial Electoral Finance Bill is expected on Tuesday as it comes back to parliament.
The proposed law would put new controls on election campaigns in election year, but has drawn a storm of protest, including street demonstrations around the country.
National's Bill English says it needs to be debated thoroughly, and his party is expected to try to make dozens of amendments to the legislation.
English says they want to tighten up definitions for electoral advertising and publishing as well as reduce the impact the bill has on private citizens.
He argues their comments on politics are restricted under the bill's current wording.
Meanwhile, the Greens will be driving for a citizens assembly to be included in the bill.
The concept would see a selection of voters taken from each electorate to work with experts to look at the best form of electoral law reform that's needed.
Green MP Metiria Turei says these recommendations can then be considered by government or referendum.
She says the system has worked well in Canada.
Turei believes it's important citizens have a direct engagement in how electoral law should be formed.
