A magazine article linking Asian immigration and crime has been slammed by the Press Council, for breaching standards of accuracy and discrimination.
Deborah Coddington's story in the magazine North and South last November, was entitled Asian Angst:Is It Time to Send Some Back?
The article included figures to show rising crime in the Asian community, however critics argue they were not shown in the context of a population rise. The Press Council says the linkage is vital, and it has criticised the story for being "emotionally loaded".
The Asia New Zealand Foundation says nothing short of a full apology from North and South will be enough.
Foundation chairman Philip Burdon says it was an appalling article. He says the article reflected no credit on the magazine and certainly did no favours for Deborah Coddington.
