A proposal by the Auckland Regional Council to ban agapanthus shrubs and several types of palm trees has angered some gardeners.

At a meeting on Wednesday night people in the gardening industry voiced their opposition to the idea and said they intend to keep planting what they like.

Phoenix, bangalow and fan palms are up for discussion in the ARC's pest management strategy over concerns they are self seeding in the environment.

There are similar concerns about agapanthus, which are popular landscaping greenery.

The Landscape Industry Association says banning the plants is ridiculous.

The ARC says there will be a public consultation process in a few months and submissions are welcome.
