The man who helped save the kakapo from extinction is heading back to Fiordland  to hunt for any birds remaining in the area.

Don Merton and a team of volunteers will go to some of the region's remotest spots for a month, following up reports of sightings.

Merton helped relocate kakapo from Fiordland to predator-free offshore islands in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Merton says he is encouraged by the fact that one of the original kakapo taken from the area is still alive, 31 years later.
