The Chinese Student Association says it is shocked to hear New Zealand Custom's claim that the majority of methamphetamine traffickers are Chinese students.

Customs says 80% of those trafficking crystal methamphetamine and the pills used to make the drug are Chinese students, being used as pawns by drug syndicates.

The student association's president, Nancy Hu says the association is surprised at the figures.  Hu says she has not heard of students being used as pawns by drug syndicates in New Zealand .

She says they have done research to see what problems were facing chinese students but methamphetamine didn't come up as an issue.

Customs says the trafficking of methamphetamine hit a record high last year with 1300 drug interceptions upon entry into New Zealand.
