Less than 10 weeks out from the election National is maintaining its lead over Labour in two opinion polls.
Sunday night's One News Colmar Brunton poll had National on 42% and Labour on 39%, while a AC Nielsen Fairfax New Zealand poll on Saturday had National on 42% and Labour on 37%.
National leader Don Brash said he's not yet counting his chickens, but the results show his party's policies are attractive to an increasing number of voters.
A spokesman for the Prime Minister said Labour is encouraged that there is very little space between the two main parties.
New Zealand First is steady on 7% in the latest One News poll, but the Green Party get some welcome news moving up three points to 6%. The Maori Party is holding on at 2% while United Future is steady on 1%.
However there are more worries for the Act Party which is down another point to 1% this month and some within their own caucus admit they face oblivion.
In the preferred prime minister stakes Labour holds up with Helen Clark up one to 40% as preferred leader. Don Brash is steady on 20% and Winston Peters picks up the five he lost in the last poll to return to 13% support.
The poll of 1,000 people has a margin of error of 3.2%.
