A Christchurch Archdeacon is sad his parish has been forced to stop ringing its church bell.

A neighbour complained to the city council about the noise from the bell at St Christopher's in Avonhead and it has been confirmed as being too loud.

Archdeacon Mike Hawke says the church has been part of the community for 50 years and every Sunday morning at 7.45 they have rung their bell for 33 seconds.

Hawke says he is sad it has come to this. He says if he bought a house next to a school he would expect noise from children, so if people buy a house next to a church they might expect to hear bells.
