Police arrested two protesters after they stopped trains from using a main line into Christchurch for several hours on Sunday afternoon.

The two activists chained themselves to the tracks while others unfurled banners.

They were protesting against state-owned Solid Energy's coal mining, saying it contributes to global warming.

Police and the fire service used industrial equipment to remove the chains.

Between 30 and 40 people were at the scene on Kirk Road in Templeton.

Graham Jury of the protest group Save Happy Valley says climate change is happening now and it has to be the end of the line for coal mining.
