Shanghai has been chosen to host the 2011 world championships,
swimming's governing body FINA said on Sunday.
The Chinese city fought off a rival bid from the Doha capital Qatar
for the right to stage the 14th edition of the event.
"They were two very, very good bids," FINA president Mustapha Larfaoui told a news conference.
"They were very, very good presentations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their bidding."
Chinese bid officials said the championships were likely to be staged in July that year, 12 months before the 2012 London Olympics.
The 12th edition of the championships are taking place in Melbourne and continue until April 1. The 2009 event will be held in Rome from July 19-August 2.
