Sue Tyler's craft - Photo blocks for Valentine's Day - 13 February

Photo Block

This is a fun, bright present that's pretty easy to pull together at the last minute. Once you master a single block, making a group of four will be easy

  • One photograph printed at 4 inches x 6 inches or larger.
  • Something to measure and cut your photo with.
  • A block of Gib Board cut to the same size as your photo. You can normally get this done at the place you buy the Gib from. When you get it cut, get extras done so you can make multiple blocks.
  • Acid-free glue and brush.
  • Paint and brush.
  • Optional extra - one foam brush and glue you can use on photographs.
  1. Prepare your block
Lightly sand the edges of your block if necessary.
Paint the sides of your block.
Do a second coat if necessary.
    Let it dry.
  2. Using acid-free/photo-safe glue
Brush light coating on the face of the block block
Make sure the glue covers all the block especially the edges
  3. Stick on the photograph
Make sure it's centered and goes to the edges
Use light pressure to remove air bubbles
    Let it dry

At this point you are finished, however if you want to protect your photo and have it last a little longer, here's an optional extra step.

  1. Optional extra - seal the top and sides
Spread glue evenly on the photo and the sides using the foam brush.
    Let it dry.

Four blocks from one image

  1.    Have four blocks of Gib cut to 2cm x 3cm
  2. Prepare each block
Lightly sand the edges of your block if necessary
Paint the sides of your block
Do a second coat if necessary
    Let it dry
  3. Take your photograph and cut in four, using a ruler
The goal is 4 pieces of 2x3
    Cut the image
If using a craft knife make sure you cut on a plastic mat or an old telephone book so you  don't ruin tables
  4. Using acid-free/photo-safe glue
Brush light coating on the face of each block
Make sure the glue covers all the block especially the edges
  5. Stick on the photograph on each block
Make sure it's centered and goes to the edges
Use light pressure to remove air bubbles
    Let it dry
If necessary, lightly sand the edges to have the photo fit perfect, make sure you sand in the same direction
  6. Optional extra - seal the top and sides
Spread glue evenly on the photo and the sides using the foam brush
    Let it dry
