There's nothing which can beat the James Bond juggernaut.
Even a challenge from outer space.
Keanu Reeves' latest, The Day The Earth Stood Still may have made waves in the American box office, but the New Zealand punters are still forking out cash to see Daniel Craig's latest outing as the spy in Quantum of Solace .
The Day The Earth Stood Still had a reasonable box office showing, but was still $45,000 behind Quantum which will probably hold the top slot for the rest of the year. (More on the challengers shortly)
Whether or not it's the pre Christmas slump with people making the most of the recession and rushing to get presents sorted, the box office overall saw a 21 percent slump in takings this weekend.
High School Musical 3 did very well holding the majority of its audience (Go Wildcats!) and will probably continue to do all right during the Christmas break and holidays.
The most interesting part of this week's Top 10 was the showing of Bollywood film Rab Ne Bana De Jodi which crashed in at number 7 with a very respectable take of over $33,000. The film, whose title means A Couple Made by God stars Shahrukh Khan and newcomer Anushka Sharma and is directed by Aditya Chopra, who earlier directed hits like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Mohabbatein.
In Bruges staged a bit of a recovery and moved back up the chart one place and musical OAPs the Young@ Heart brigade held firm at No8.
This week sees the release of Madagascar 2 - Escape to Africa which probably won't topple Bond from the top spot.
The interesting challenge will come at the end of the year - with 3 fairly big films being unleashed - Baz Luhrmann's much anticipated Australia, the start of the vampire franchise, Twilight and the Oscar tipped Frost/ Nixon .
