Some tips to help save some money when it comes to driving.
The average New Zealand family spends $6000 on petrol each year. ONE News has found some ways to help trim that back.
The first piece of advice is simple: Drive less.
More than a third of the trips we make are 2km or shorter, which is roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk. Not only are there benefits for your health, but your car uses 20% more petrol when you drive with a cold engine.
If walking is inconvenient, there are always the classic options of biking or taking the bus.
There are some new options too. Cityhop is a company that hires cars at $12 an hour, and you do not even have to fill the tank back up.
"Car share is all the good things about car ownership and none of the bad, you don't have to worry about registration, whether your tyres are pumped up, we do all of that for you," says Victoria Carter from Cityhop.
However, the main way to save on petrol is to downsize. Some of the small newer cars can run cheaper than hybrids, have heaps of room, and still get you from A to B in good time.
Other ideas that can help save money: try not speeding, get your car serviced, turn off the air conditioning and start using cruise control.
Do all of this and an average family can save up to a quarter of their average fuel bill.
And you may also be saving our environment too.
