An official welcome has been held at parliament for Irish President Mary McAleese as her week-long visit to New Zealand gets underway.

The Defence Force's Maori Cultural Group performed a traditional powhiri on Monday morning before a wreath-lying ceremony at the National War Memorial and at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Buckle St, in Wellington.

An official state luncheon in her honour is being held in parliament's banquet Hall.

Also on the president's agenda this week is a plaque unveiling ceremony at Frank Kitts Park to commemorate the Irish contribution to Wellington.
