Australia's battle with horse flu is teaching MAF some valuable lessons in preparation for a potential outbreak in New Zealand.
MAF animal response team manager Andre Halderen says monitoring the outbreak in Australia is vital, to learn how the virus might behave should an outbreak occur in this country.
He says MAF have a guaranteed supply of one vaccine should it be needed, and the registration of another one adds to the country's preparedness.
He says the best way to stop horse flu coming here is to keep the border closed to Australian horses.
