An Australian adventurer, who has covered 10,000 kilometres on horseback, from Mongolia to Hungary, will complete his epic journey in late September.

Tim Cope, 28, has been travelling for three years and two months.

Along the way, he has braved extreme temperatures and had his dog and horses stolen.

"I wanted to know what it was like to be a nomad to travel to Europe by horse and understand what connections remain between the different cultures stretching from Mongolia to Hungary," he said.

At the end of his journey, which finishes at Opusztaszer in Hungary, Cope will be greeted by the Kazakh, Mongolian and Australian ambassadors, school children and hundreds of Hungarians who will join in the celebrations.

Opusztaszer was where in the year 896 the modern nation of Hungary was born. The original nomads of Hungary, known as Magyars, came from the east by horse, followed by many other steppe peoples, including the Mongols.

There will be dozens of horses with traditional horsemanship on show - including archery, breathtaking tricks, and outfits dating back to the time of Genghis Khan and earlier.

But Cope hopes to be back in the saddle before too long.

"It's hard to believe that the end of the steppe is in sight after such a long time when it often seemed that Hungary was unreachable," he said.

"The horses and this journey have become my life and I'm not sure how I will cope when it is all over".

"Of course, I am really looking forward to spending time at home with my family again but I won't be hanging up the saddle for too long. The horizon is always beckoning."
