A Marlborough high school is defending its reputation after claims of a major bullying problem there.

Andrew Sowman says he and his friends were physically abused at Marlborough Boys College, to the extent that his worried parents decided to home school him because of fears for his safety.

Another parent says she has confiscated more than 30 knives from students trying to protect themselves.

Marlborough Boys College acknowledges there is a problem, but says it is coming down hard on bullies.

School board chairman Peter O'Keeffe says the school responds to each and every incident that occurs.

"We talk to the bullies and they face consequences...we also work with the victims...which is really important because we need to look after them."

Blenheim police have confirmed that they are investigating allegations of bullying at Marlborough Boys' College but would not be interviewed and said the matter is confidential.
