The Maori Party has decided to oppose the Government's plan to bring in a 90-probationary period for new employees.

The policy will see workplaces with fewer than 20 workers introduce the three-month period.

National has been in talks with the Maori Party in recent days to try to shore up their support, however the talks have failed.

MP Hone Harawira says there is no evidence that a probationary periods provide gains for new, inexperienced or marginalised employees.

The policy will still pass through Parliament, thanks to the support of ACT.
