Dane Caroline Wozniacki proved she was becoming a tennis force by beating seventh seed Alize Cornet of France 7-5 6-4 on Saturday to reach the New Haven Open final.
The unseeded Wozniacki, who won her first title in Stockholm this month, defeated her fellow 18-year-old in one hour 29 minutes and next plays top seed Anna Chakvetadze or former world number one Amelie Mauresmo.
"I knew if I let her play, and her decide the points, then it would be really difficult for me," Wozniacki told reporters. "In the second set I was down 3-0 and she was more aggressive.
"I was just running and it didn't pay off so I was thinking, 'ok, now I need to ... just try to play my game'."
Wozniacki broke to lead 5-3 in the first set. Her opponent broke back but the Dane then snatched a second break in the 12th game.
Cornet, with her left thigh strapped for the second successive day, broke twice to lead 3-0 in the second before Wozniacki came storming back to seal victory.
The Frenchwoman, ranked four places above Wozniacki at number 18, said she ran out of steam.
"The thigh was ok but actually I feel tired because of the Olympic Games, the jet-lag and everything," said Cornet. "Today I was just too tired to win."
Cornet said she was confident her thigh would be fine for next week's US Open.
