The Auckland War Memorial Museum says it is going through an organistaional resturcture and no staff have been made redundant, though some may have to re-apply for jobs.
The museum's new director Vanda Vitali, who joined the organisation last year, says restructuring is necessary.
The union for the workers there says 66 of the organisation's 150 permanent staff are looking at redundancy and a further 31 on fixed term contracts may be let go.
They include conservation staff and technicians who set up and preserve the museum's collections.
But the Auckland Museum Trust Board Chairman David Hill disputes that saying while 28 roles have been disestablished, no staff have been made redundant.
"The restructuring is not about cutting costs, or reducing the total number of employees.
Hill says the museum will be advertising 21 new roles which existing staff can apply for.
