The Corrections Department has made grass areas which can double as putting greens and golf driving ranges available at two North Island prisons, attracting the ire of an opposition MP.
Inmates at Auckland and Wanganui prisons also have the option of other activities such as petanque.
The Department is justifying the facilities, saying it is committed to providing alternatives to criminal lifestyles.
But National's Law and Order spokesman Simon Power says rather than prisons being places of rehabilitation, they have become more like country clubs.
