Two Blenheim men have spoken about a weekend drama in which their plane ran out of fuel mid-flight and they prayed for a safe landing.

Owen Wilson says he was taking his friend Grant Stubbs flying for his birthday on Sunday.

He says they had planned a trip for just under two hours around the Marlborough Sounds and prior to leaving should have had enough fuel for two-and-a-half hours.

But Wilson says 20 minutes from home, with mountains everywhere, the engine stopped.

He says they both prayed hard and after just clearing a ridge ahead of them saw a disused airstrip below.

Wilson says they landed right next to a 20-foot sign that read, "Jesus is Lord - Revival".
