Firefighters are dampening down hot spots after bringing a scrub fire under control in Nelson.

The fire had threatened houses in Atawhai.

Around 100 people were evacuated from their homes but were allowed to return on Tuesday night after getting the all clear.

The Fire Service says strong winds were fanning the fire but they eventually died down, allowing firefighters to bring it under control.
