A knife-wielding intruder has been arrested after storming the same Auckland gun shop where a man was shot almost a year ago.
Witnesses say the man was suicidal and wanted to be shot, but instead police pepper sprayed the intruder, and when that did not work, used a taser gun.
Last year another man, Ricky Beckham, entered the store armed with a machete. He was shot in the stomach by gun store co-owner Greg Carvell. Beckham survived his injuries and was jailed for two years and nine months.
Last month Carvell was acquitted of unlawful possession of a firearm over the shooting.
But on Monday the gun shop had a horror flashback.
"He was trying to find this shop because he wanted to get shot and we tried to explain to him that we don't go around shooting people," says gun shop colleague Bruce Motley.
Greg Carvell was not at the shop at the time but his father, and shop co-owner, Ray Carvell was.
"He pulled the knife and showed the knife. He didn't run at us or thrust at us, because if he had of it would have been a different scenario," he says.
As soon as the intruder pulled out the knife both Motley and Carvell grabbed police issue batons that are sold in the shop. Fortunately they never had to use them.
"I could have taken that knife off him with may bare hands...but I'm not going to put myself in an unfortunate position where I'm going to have to do that."
Police have charged the intruder. The man is receiving medical
attention and will likely appear in court on Tuesday.
