A group of first-time skydivers made history on Friday by leaping from an Air Force Hercules.

The feat is part of a project aimed at helping young people from Canteen and Project K who have already faced many challenges. The challenge is to encourage the teens to live each day to the fullest.

Organiser Pete Mahon says his son Jesse lost his sense of direction in life
at 19 and skydiving prevented Jesse from going off the rails.

"It just all fell into place like clockwork," says Jesse.

Fiona Hayworth lost her brother to leukaemia and she was one to line up for the leap of faith. "I think it's gonna be scary at first," said Hayworth who loved the freefall.

The Air Force readily agreed to take part and provided a warhorse for the jump. As well as being a first for the young people, the occasion was also historic for the Air Force. It was the first group of civilians to jump out of a Hercules.

The jumpers all got to experience 40 seconds of freefall.
