Two pay TV
networks - one American and the other British - will broadcast
dramatic re-enactments of testimony in the upcoming Michael Jackson
child molestation trial.
Executives for E! Entertainment Television and BSkyB announced they
will present the daily re-enactments of the Jackson trial, based on
actual court transcripts of the previous day's proceedings.
Jackson, 46, has pleaded not guilty to charges of molesting a boy,
conspiracy and administering an intoxicating agent, alcohol, to his
alleged victim.
Given international interest in the pop star's case and the lack of
cameras, the series will "bring the trial to life", said E! chief
executive officer Ted Harbert.
The partnership calls for five daily half-hour programs to be shown
during the course of the trial, scheduled to start on January 31,
plus a Saturday recap. Each network will package the recreations
with its own hosts.
There was no word on casting, but Harbert said he had someone in
mind for the leading role.
He
promised the effort would be done in good taste.
"I'm a person who believes strongly that what we need to bring to
TV is taste," a straight-faced Harbert told reporters.
"I understand why you're laughing, but I also understand that
putting shows on that people want to watch is what the job is," he
said, adding that "the tone of the broadcast is going to be deadly
serious".
In 1996, E! aired re-enactments of OJ Simpson's civil trial, which,
like Jackson's upcoming criminal trial, wasn't televised.
