The latest million dollar plus seizure of crystal methamphetamine in Auckland shows a rapidly increasing market for the class A drug.
Customs officers seized the drugs with a street value of $1.2 million at Auckland Airport in two Baileys liquer bottles.
A 41-year old New Zealand woman has been charged with importing them.
Customs officers received a tip off from their Hong Kong colleagues about the courier and her hand luggage.
Earlier this month Customs intercepted 9kg of crystal methamphetamine stashed inside lava lamps. It is believed the two hauls are linked.
But of more concern is the growing amount of the drug being found in New Zealand.
The latest seizure brings the total of crystal methamphetamine intercepted so far this year to almost 12kg. Last year customs seized 862 grams of the drug.
Customs say most of it is destined for the New Zealand market.
Customs Minister Rick Barker says the sophistication of the drug busts suggest New Zealand is being targeted by international drug syndicates.
Speaking at the launch for a new mobile Customs unit in Wellington, Barker congratulated Customs staff for intercepting the drugs.
He says mobile units fitted with x-ray equipment will soon be deployed to ports around the country to increase security and help in the battle against drugs.
