One of the New Zealand's largest retailers of BZP based party pills says it would be happy to see some aspects of their sale regulated.
A parliamentary select committee is considering whether the pills should be classified as a drug, under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
That would allow for age restrictions and regulations on their marketing.
Dougal Gilroy from Cosmic Corner told the Health Select Committee that the current legal environment is encouraging so-called cowboy operators to sell unsafe and unlabelled pills.
Last week the the New Zealand Drug Foundation also said they supported a bid to have the pills regulated under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Drug foundation executive director Ross Bell has told the committee that it would be sensible to regulate the pills along the same lines as tobacco.
He says there is currently only limited regulation over the pills and the Food Safety Authority has advised that it should not be responsible for them, as they are not really dietary supplements.
