Eagles' guitarist Joe Walsh turned out to perform a free concert in parliament's grand hall to promote a drug free lifestyle.

He is doing a two week, self-funded tour around New Zealand. He says he is giving his time free, because he credits New Zealand for helping him get rid of his drug addictions.

Walsh says he came to his sense and beat his alcohol and cocaine addictions after hanging out with reggae band Herbs in the early 1990s.

He says it is wonderful to be back in the country.

"If I have come all this way and anything I say saves one life, then my trip has been worth it," he says.

The banquet hall was filled with fans, from Black Power members to Jim Anderton, who counts himself as an Eagles fan.

"It was like going back in time, but with the marvellous experience of sitting next to someone who is an icon in music," Anderton said.

The Eagles were the biggest band in the late 1960s and '70s, with classics like Hotel California.

Walsh's tour is is being organised by the anti-drug group Mokai Whanau Ora.
