Veronica Mars

Episode One - Pilot

Screened Friday July 15

In the wealthy, seaside community of Neptune, the rich and powerful make the rules. They own the town and the high school, and they desperately try to keep their dirty little secrets just that...secret. Unfortunately for them, there's Veronica Mars (series star Kristen Bell), a smart, fearless 17-year-old apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving the town's toughest mysteries.

Veronica actually used to be one of the popular girls, walking the halls of Neptune High with the rest of the "beautiful people." But it all came crumbling down around her after her best friend, Lilly, was murdered, and her then sheriff father, Keith (series star Enrico Colantoni), was removed from office for naming Lilly's billionaire father, Jake Kane (recurring guest star Kyle Secor), as the lead suspect. After Jake was exonerated, the scandal cost Keith his job, his home and his wife, and Veronica was ostracized by her friends, including her boyfriend, Duncan (series star Teddy Dunn), Lilly's brother.

During the day, Veronica must still negotiate high school like any average teenage girl. Mentored by teacher Mallory Dent (series star Sydney Tamiia Poitier) and joined by a fellow outcast, new sophomore Wallace Fennel (series star Percy Daggs III), she bravely maneuvers through her classes, wary of former in-crowd friends like Duncan and his best buddy, Logan Echolls (series star Jason Dohring), and edgy outsiders like Eli "Weevil" Navarro (series star Francis Capra) and his bike club boys.

At night, Veronica helps with her father's struggling, new private investigator business, sneaking through back alleys and scoping out motels with a telescopic-lens camera--while studying her math book--in an attempt to uncover the California beach town's darkest secrets. Pushed to the edge of this multicultural, venomous little place, Veronica relentlessly continues to search for evidence that will clear her father's name and get her back into favor at school--but what she finds may tear the town of Neptune apart at the seams.

After coming to Wallace's aid when he is duct taped to the school's flagpole, Veronica incurs the wrath of the perpetrator, Weevil. To get him and his gang to stop bothering her and Wallace, Veronica devises an intricate plan that helps some of Weevil's cronies avoid trouble with the law. Meanwhile, defying Keith, Veronica pursues Jake, suspecting him of adultery. But she also makes an unsettling discovery about her mother, who abandoned Veronica and Keith a year ago.

Clues pertaining to the Lilly Kane murder revealed this episode:

The following is revealed in flashback:

- Lilly Kane's was discovered dead at the Kane estate with a massive head wound.

- As the Kane family was so high profile, the case was a nationwide sensation. Veronica's then sheriff father, Keith, named Lilly's billionaire father, Jake Kane, as the lead suspect.

- A former Kane employee, Abel Koontz, was arrested for the murder after some of Lilly Kane's clothes were found in his possession.

- Six weeks after Lilly Kane's death, someone in the Sheriff's department leaked the graphic crime scene video to the internet - perhaps ironic as Jake Kane made all his money in streaming video. Veronica's father was blamed. A emergency recall election removed him from office. Veronica's mother Lianne couldn't handle the loss in status, and abandoned her family.

- In addition to being Veronica's best friend, Lilly was also Logan's girlfriend.

- After being ostracized by her friends, Veronica attended a party where her drink was spiked and she was raped by unknown parties. Sheriff Lamb, her father's replacement, wouldn't press charges. He is too prove a persistent nemesis.

The following is new, present day information:

- When Mars Investigations is hired by Celeste Kane after she suspects Jake of cheating on here, Veronica trails him. She notes the number plate of car owned the women Jake is meeting - it is her mother's!

- Veronica discovers a secret file in her father's safe that reveals he is still working on the Lilly Kane case, despite Koontz, who confessed to the crime, currently being on death row.

- Keith tells Veronica to drop the Jake Kane case, and lies to her about why. Keith doesn't know that Veronica knows the car was her mother's. Veronica is perplexed as to why her father would lie to her about this.
