Challenge Three (Episode 4)

CREATE AN OUTDOOR LIVING AREA

Indoor/outdoor flow is the buzz phrase in real estate because it is desirable for our outdoor living space to connect well with the house.

DO:

  • Make it as easy as possible to access your garden from your house.
  • Think of your garden as an extra room. What are the purposes of this room will it be used for, entertaining, sunbathing, playing sports/games? Maybe it will be used for all of these things?
  • Design your outdoor living space to compliment both the interior and the exterior of your home aim for a seamless flow between the two.
  • Its a good idea to keep things simple choose materials, textures and colours carefully so there is a sense of unity in your space.
  • Keep the size of the outdoor living area in proportion with the house, so that it feels spacious and welcoming.
  • Think about the use of other features, such as lighting or an outdoor fireplace so the area can be used at night or in colder weather. Water features can add the extra dimension of sound to the space.
  • Look at the colour and texture of your planting. If your area is small remember that less is more, so choose your plants carefully to accentuate your space.
