Ultimate Garden

Challenge Seven (Episode 8)

CREATE A UTILITY AREA

Regardless of how big your garden is, there will always be stuff you don't want to see - clothesline, tools, kids toys. Think about how you can hide these things away without disrupting the overall feel and flow of your garden.

DO:

  • Look carefully at the space you have, the utility items you have and how much space you will need to house them.
  • Look at how your utility space affects your whole garden design.
  • Think about using a fold up clothesline to give you more space and to hide away easily when not in use.
  • Put a shed somewhere that's not going to dominate the garden but is still accessible and practical to use.
  • Think about putting a little nook somewhere that you can store a garden hose or a portable sandpit.
  • Remember you don't have to make these things invisible - adding these little extra spaces can make your garden look bigger than it is.
  • Repetition of materials is a great way to blend something new with the existing garden. Think about what materials you've got and try to use something similar to help the utility space to nestle into the background and to help create a feeling of unity.
  • Use planting to help blend any buildings/structures into the garden. Plants will grow in the front, on the roof and up the walls - again helping to create a feeling of unity.
