Challenge Five
Challenge Five (Episode 6)
CREATE A FOCAL POINT
Focal points are vital - it's great to have a feature that catches the eye, but they should enhance the surrounding garden rather than dominate it.
These can be anything from a specimen tree, to a raised level, to a great view beyond. But decide where you want your focal point best seen from and what you want it to achieve.
Focal points can set the overall theme of your garden; they can
be a point of interest that draws you into the garden; they can
give the impression of greater space; or they can bring attention
away from something you don't want to look at, like a high rise
building over the fence or a big power pole.
DO:
- " Look at the view from your garden and decide what you want the eye to be drawn to and away from. If you have a view of the neighbour's rooftops use a focal point in the foreground.
- " Remember that water features can make an ideal focal point, as water is something we are often naturally drawn to.
- " Use a series of focal points to connect the different
parts of your garden. These can provide continuity between the
front and rear spaces of your garden.
