Your Say: New Moon reviews

Published: 12:06PM Tuesday October 20, 2009

Twi-hards you have done us proud with some great reviews of New Moon

Three of tvnz.co.nz's most knowledgable Twilight employees have chosen the three winners. It was a close call and a fair amount of discussion was had around the reviews and how the critics had formulated their opinions. The winners will all get:

  • A pack of three annuals - one for Robert Pattinson, one for Kristen Stewart and one for Taylor Lautner, all courtesy of Hachette NZ
  • A copy of the New Moon Soundtrack
  • A copy of the Twilight Soundtrack

The winners and two highly commended reviews are below.

Winners (in no particular order)

I'm loyal to the end - Team Edward, but any living and breathing woman could not deny that the moment Jacob rips off his shirt is one she will never forget. I was giggling like a teenager after we had all finised with our gasp. And then my best friend announced in a whisper "I've swapped teams!" ... traitor.

Great to see the book brought to life and who cares about the technicalities of great acting or effects. Everyone needs a great love story!

2) Renaenae
I just finished watching it on the big screen. I thoroughly enjoyed it - the CGI was fantastic, very realistic, they took trime to get the motions of the wolf pack just perfect. I was impressed with Taylor Lautner's performance - he showed more depth to his character this time around. Edward - the Romeo of my heart. The only thing that let me down was Kirsten Stewarts performance. She needed more emotion on her face as the love of her life was gone!

3) Kary
I read a review that said New Moon was a good movie, better than Twilight, fans would love it and not be disappointed. While reading I was wondering if the reviewer and I had seen the same movie. When I got to the part where he said the movie was just over an hour and half long I realized we obviously hadn't seen the same movie. (Either that or he fell asleep half way through it and that wouldn't surprise me). New Moon was 2 hours and 10 minutes long and that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

The book was my least favourite of the four due to the absence of the Cullens but I thought the movie would be able to bring them back into the story more. Instead they featured in the movie even less than in the book. I knew from the trailers that the whole atmosphere created in Twilight had changed. I knew some had awful new wigs and over the top new contact lenses where-as in Twilight the contacts were subtle by comparison. Even the Cullens dress style changed which doesn't lend much to the continuity of the story.

I also knew from the trailers how fake and unreal the wolves looked. So although I was disappointed considering the much larger budget for the film. What I wasn't prepared for was how badly this movie would SUCK! Mere words can't even begin to express how bitterly disappointed I am with it and where to start?

I found the attempts of conveying the story to film from the book blatant and obvious. The dialogue was long-winded, droning and boring at times, yet barely enough to even make sense in other parts. I didn't feel the heartbreak of Edward leaving Bella whereas the book had me crying my heart out. I didn't really feel the great love and friendship that was Bella and Jakes either. There was no onscreen chemistry between them and in fact, even the chemistry so potent between Bella and Edward in Twilight was totally gone from New Moon.

Finally the soundtrack. Another major fail. Half of it sounded like something from a cheesy 50s romance flick. I half expected the characters to burst into song and start dancing in some parts. Ugh!

Highly commended (in no particular order)

It was better than Twilight in that it followed the book far better but I found that the editing needed work and the CGI whilst great for the Vampire parts was very fake looking fo the Werewolves.

Bella's halucinations were well done and the way what she was feeling was conveyed with the e-mails worked very well for me, as did October to January. While I doubt I will go see it again I do not think the average Twilighter will be disappointed but drag-alongs and others will probably be going WTF.

2) Shells67
Absolutely loved it. Vampires & Werewolves are a mere consequence, it's the pure love that makes this movie so addictive.

For those who crave this sort of love for themselves get lost in the fantasy. Who can help it. We all want to be Bella finding our own Edward. I remain ever faithful to Team Edward, and after a few more visits to the cinema, I shall sit and impatiently wait for the next installment in what I see as escapism. I squealed with delight at the last 30 seconds of the movie
