Okay, okay, I confess, the New Moon hype has got to me. Back to the realm of young love, vampires, werewolves and fast cars I go. This, despite finding the book, New Moon, a frustratingly slow and drawn out read. Oh well. No point being picky now, a blockbuster's about to descend.
It's time instead for a quick re-read of said book, another viewing of Twilight and some online scouting for the latest goss on the movie's 'Hot 3'. Now all that's needed is some input from Twihards - the fans about the challenges facing New Moon on celluloid. I didn't have to wait long, their reactions are vampire swift.
Yep, Kiwi Twihards would lose at vampire baseball but I reckon they'd give the Cullens a run for their money in clear, fleet footed communications. A tentative appeal for expectations of New Moon set off a flurry of activity surely even vampires would have trouble keeping pace with.
Within 15 minutes replies had flooded in from fans aged between 11 and 40-something. Confirmation, as if I needed it, that anticipation is high in the Kiwi Twilight Zone. And fans here know exactly what they need to keep them satisfied, in much the same way as some of Forks' more curious residents.
An 11-year-old from Team Edward emailed that 'the break up' will be central to her enjoyment of the film.
".. the key element they will really need for New Moon is the sense of abandonment and heartbreak for Bella. How she has made Edward her world and now he is gone there is no need to live."
Her Mum, on the other hand, is more interested in Jacob, 'minus his shirt'. She's definitely in Team Jacob.
Other Twihards have been pondering the mechanics of Jacob's on-screen transformation.
".. he's supposed to go from normal teenager - testosterone pumped about-to-turn-into-a-wolf teenager - to wolf itself. Aside from stacking on the muscle he's supposed to grow by about a foot - can they stretch Taylor Lautner?"
By the look of the trailer, special effects have that one covered. Even so, the prospect of seeing much more Jacob, in whatever form, is worrying some in Team Edward.
"For New Moon to fly, they will have to get around the book's major absence of Edward Cullen somehow. Sure, Jacob is nice to look at, but the film makers will need to keep Team Edward happy!"
Rest easy, Team Edward. Online interviews with New Moon's 'Hot 3' have revealed the film adaptation will allow Team Edward to keep an eye on their vampire while he's keeping his eye on Bella. Phew, so far so good.
Other Twihards offered more contemplative thoughts on New Moon's place in the 'big Twilight picture.'
"New Moon is like a "bridge" .. about establishing and cementing Bella and Jacob's relationship so the love triangle can really fly in Eclipse. It could therefore suffer from too much character building and not enough plot momentum."
And there you have it. Slow plot or not, there's much, much more still to come.
Eclipse is already shot and waiting in the wings. The love triangle continues on screen on June 30, 2010.
For what it's worth, I reckon the success of New Moon rests with
Bella. Even though we know how it all turns out I want to be
convinced, for a while at least, it just isn't going to this
time.
