Under The Carpet

TVNZ Heartland

Screens Monday 1 August at 7pm

One evening a young Indian man on his way home from work was severely beaten by a group of white supremacists.

Traumatised and psychologically scarred, his life was changed forever. One of his friends, Sanjay, became angry and decided to investigate why the attack occurred and who did it.

The TVNZ Heartland premiere of Under The Carpet follows Sanjay's personal journey to uncover the perpetrators of racial violence and his community's reaction to it.

What he uncovers is a pattern of victimisation of New Zealand's Indian community by the extreme right in New Zealand, and by other groups who perceive the passive Indians as easy targets.

The unwillingness of both the Indian community and the police to label an attack 'racist' means many attacks go unnoticed or unconnected.  Effectively sweeping the problem Under The Carpet.

The resulting documentary is a powerful and disturbing essay on racial violence in a nation that once prided itself on its racial tolerance.
