LOCAL DOCO WINS GOLD MEDAL IN NEW YORK
17 April 2013
Natural history doco Primeval New Zealand, commissioned by TVNZ and produced by NHNZ, has won top honours at the highly competitive New York Festivals Film and Television Awards, held on April 9.
Primeval New Zealand was awarded the 2013 gold world medal for best nature and wildlife documentary – the latest in a string of international awards for the NZ on Air funded documentary, which aired on TV ONE last year.
TVNZ commissioner Jude Callen says: “Primeval New Zealand was one of TVNZ’s first local forays back into the natural history genre for many years and we were thrilled that it struck a real chord with our TV ONE audience when we first screened it in January last year.
“To then go on and get such a strong and positive international response is hugely satisfying especially for a documentary that has such a strong Kiwi accent. Our story about our unique country and the weird and wonderful creatures that made it home has gone global.”
Natural history programming has made a successful return to TV ONE’s primetime schedule, says Callen.
“Our natural history strand has been hugely popular with viewers so we are thrilled to have two new NHNZ series in the works for TV ONE. Together we’re working on Our Big Blue Backyard about New Zealand’s extraordinary coastal and ocean life and Wild About New Zealand, which explores our spectacular national parks.”
Both 6 x 1 hour series are made with the support of NZ on Air’s Platinum Fund, as was Primeval New Zealand.
Primeval New Zealand has previously earned the Asian Television Award for best natural history or wildlife programme; the International Wildlife Film Festival Award for best scientific content, best graphics/animation and best TV programme under USD$250,000; and the Jackson Hole Science Media Award for Life Sciences.
