The head of Aviation Security says it will take a law change before full-body scanners can be introduced at airports in New Zealand.
Full-body scanners use radio waves to see through a person's clothing and spot hidden weapons or packages.
Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is bringing them in within three weeks following the Christmas Day attempt to bring down a plane flying to the US. The British government is also looking at adding the scanners to its security screening system.
Everitt says at the moment the law prevents the scanners being used in New Zealand. He says New Zealanders want the least intrusive option when travelling and security officials have to work within that.
Legislation passed by the previous government outlawed the scanners on privacy grounds and the Privacy Commissioner says there would have to be extensive public consultation before it was overturned.
Marie Shroff says there are always a lot of hoops to jump through when it comes to this kind of international border control issue. She says the Commission hasn't yet been approached for a view on the technology.
