Unions are threatening to impose bans on the loading of bags on Jetstar flights throughout the Oceania region, partly because of concerns over the adequacy of baggage screening on flights to New Zealand.
The International Transport Workers Federation, which represents millions of union members worldwide, has threatened to impose restrictions on the loading and unloading of passenger bags if the grievances of Australian unions are not addressed, the Hobart Mercury reported.
The Transport Workers Union initiated separate legal action in Australia's Federal Court alleging that checked baggage was not adequately screened and cleared before it was put on Jetstar aircraft on five occasions between June and September.
The union claimed to have written statements from Qantas employees alleging that bags were not adequately checked before flights bound for New Zealand, Honolulu and Phuket, in Thailand.
