Australian passengers have been trapped on board a Jetstar flight at Honolulu International Airport for hours in reportedly "seriously dangerous" conditions.

The flight, bound for Melbourne, had pulled away from terminal at 7.30am local time when the 250 passengers on board were told there was a technical problem.

A passenger told Melbourne newspaper The Age conditions were "seriously dangerous".

He said people were becoming sick and there was no air conditioning.

"We sat in horrendous conditions onboard as they kept turning off the aircon," he said. "It must have gotten near 40 degrees onboard," said a passenger.

"The first announcement was that in-flight entertainment was not working, then (when) we pulled away from gate the major issues started."

The passengers eventually returned to the airport terminal after nearly two and a half hours.

A spokesperson for Jetstar said that the plane was air conditioned and that the wait was two and a half hours.
