People going to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme now need to get pre-approval for their journey online.

The new electronic travel authorisation is a facility New Zealanders can use for trips of less than three months, which don't need a visa.

New Zealand is one of 34 countries which benefit from the Visa Waiver Programme with the US.

US Consular Chief in Auckland Nick Greanias says the new electronic form replaces a tedious paper trail.

He says applications usually take less than a minute to be checked, 99.5% are approved, and it costs nothing.

There is a link to the official website on the New Zealand Embassy site.

You are also warned to beware of unofficial sites charging a fee to do exactly the same process..
