The slopes at Mt Hutt may open in May after the dumping of snow the ski field has received in the last two weeks.

Mt Hutt has received more than 170cm of snow over the past 12 days resulting in a 110cm snow base.

Ski Area Manager Dave Wilson says the field has decided to work towards a Queen's Birthday weekend opening on Saturday 30 May.

He says it is the best early snow Mt Hutt has seen in decades.

"Our outlook for a 30 May opening is positive as long as conditions remain favourable and the weather permits on the day," says Wilson.

Meanwhile, Taranaki's Manganui Skifield is set to make an early opening for the season after good snowfalls over the weekend.

Forty centimetres of snow over the weekend has provided the base needed for the t-bar and learners tows.

More snow is forecast over next two days.
