Prime Minister John Key wants everyone to invite their overseas-based friends and family for a visit to New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand has launched a "Great Kiwi Invite" campaign to boost international visitor numbers.

"New Zealanders are known as great travellers, and as result so many of us have connections overseas," Key, also the Tourism Minister, says.

He encouraged people to log onto the promotion's website and send a personal invitation.

If an invitation is accepted the person will go into a draw to win an Air New Zealand trip.

"Tourism is a major economic driver and has the potential to help get the country through the recession in good shape."
