Travellers to Fiji can expect to pay an extra NZD$34 in departure tax.

The Fijian Government announced the price hike will come into effect from today, angering New Zealand's largest travel agency.

Flight Centre's Executive General Manager Mike Friend said the increase is unfair to travellers.

"To increase departure tax by this significant amount in itself is unfair, but to give such short notice is unacceptable," Friend said.

Flight Centre expects some customers may change their travel plans over the next week.

They will give their customers the option of transferring their deposits to other tropical destinations, such as the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Hawaii, Bali or Thailand, to avoid paying the extra tax.
