A Croatian tourism official has been sacked for making comments about drunken New Zealand and Australian tourists.

Pave Zupan Ruskovic told a local newspaper that when young New Zealanders and Australians arrive in Dubrovnik they are "drunk and crazy" and this is not appropriate for the city.

Her comments have landed her in hot water with Dubrovnik's Mayor, Andro Vlahusic, who says he will not be renewing her contract as the city's tourism destination manager.

Vlahusic says Dubrovnik is an open and free city where all guests are welcome and the destination manager's comments were unacceptable.

But Zupan Ruskovic, a former Croatian Tourism Minister, insists Dubrovnik does not need "drunken Kiwi and Aussie tourists walking naked down the central street."

The walled city of Dubrovnik, on the Adriatic Sea coast, is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic.

In 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, Dubrovnik was besieged by Serb-Montenegrin forces for seven months and received heavy damage from being shelled.
