Bahrain's national carrier will start flying to Iran and Iraq again this September.

The airline, Gulf Air, got the green light from the Bahrain Government.

Flights to Baghdad, Erbil and Basra in Iraq, and Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan in Iran, will commence progressively during September and October.

Though Bahrain has given the flights the nod, the deal is still subject to approval from Iraq and Iran.

Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Samer Majali said he is glad to resume operations in the countries.

"I am sure this will be a welcoming news for thousands of Iranians and Iraqis living and working in Bahrain and the GCC countries as well as the business community for whom the direct flights will be a great advantage," he said.

Majali said in the past Gulf Air has been the first to restart services.

"We were the first and only full-service GCC carrier to operate into Baghdad back in 1976. Again, we were the first carrier to restart our operations in 2009, which received overwhelming support from travellers with most of our flights flying to full capacity."

He said he hopes to get a high level of support from customers.
