Twilight vs The Vampire Diaries

Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in The Vampire Diaries on TV2

The vampire phenomenon kicked into a higher gear with the release of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series - or did it? Take a look back at the presence of vampires in recent fiction. Find out who kicked off the trend and how each series compares.

1970s

Interview With a Vampire (also known as The Vampire Chronicles) by Anne Rice
First published in 1976

Trivia:
Anne Rice's novel inspired Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise to don dodgy wigs and feed on a pre-pubescent Kirsten Dunst's blood as vampires Louis and Lestat respectively.

Do the vampires feed on human blood (i.e. are they good or bad?)
While Lestat prefers feeding on slaves, Louis initially opts for animals. Eventually he begins feeding on humans.

Similarities with other vampire novels featured in this article:
Like Twilight's Edward Cullen, the character of Claudia was dying of the plague when she was turned into a vampire. Rice's vampires turn to ash under the sun, like those featured in The Southern Vampire Mysteries.

1990s

The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith
First published in 1991 (14 years before Twilight!)

Trivia:
In L.J. Smith's book, the character of Elena is blonde and referred to as an 'ice queen'.  In the television adaptation Elena is played by brunette Nina Dobrev

When Elena meets Stefan, he goes out of his way to avoid her a la Twilight- in the television series, the two are drawn to each other from the start.

Do the vampires feed on human blood (i.e. are they good or bad?)
Stefan drinks animal blood, his brother Damon drinks human blood.

Similarities with other vampire novels featured in this article:
The Salvatore brothers are impossibly handsome, just like the Twilight fellas. Stefan and Elena's relationship is also established at high school, like Bella and Edward.

Differences:
With the possible exception of Interview With a Vampire's Lestat, the Salvatore brothers are the oldest vampires of this bunch, at 500 years old. (In the television series, they are a mere 150 years old, approximately).

2000s

The Southern Vampire Mysteries (aka The Sookie Stackhouse Novels) by Charlaine Harris
First published in 2001

Trivia:
In The Southern Vampire Mysteries, vampire blood is also a highly sought after commodity by humans, and is sold on the black market.

Do the vampires feed on human blood (i.e. are they good or bad?)
Thanks to the introduction of synthetic blood, it's no longer necessary for vampires to feed on human blood ... it doesn't mean they don't do it, however.

Similarities with other vampire novels featured in this article:
Harris' vampires can only enter a house by invitation, like those featured in The Vampire Diaries.

Differences:
Sookie Stackhouse's fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana isn't only the home of vampires - shapeshifters, werewolves, weretigers and werepanthers are also residents. If a mortal mates with a were-species or a shapefiter, a were-child may be conceived.

The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
First novel published in 2005

Trivia:
Each of the novels in the Twilight Saga were inspired by classics: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (Twilight); Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (New Moon); Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (Eclipse); The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare (Breaking Dawn).

Do the vampires feed on human blood (i.e. are they good or bad?)
Half and half. The Cullen family (of which Edward is a member) consider themselves 'vegetarians' as they feed only on animal blood. Nemeses of the family (including the Volturi) feed on humans.

Similarities with other vampire novels featured in this article:
Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels also feature vampire and werewolf mythology.

Differences:
Meyer's vamps sparkle in the sun.

House of Night series by mother and daughter team P.C. and Kristin Cast
First novel published in 2007

Trivia:
The House of Night 'vampyres' use magic - and their survival depends on their proximity to other vampyres.

Do the vampires feed on human blood (i.e. are they good or bad?)
Yes they feed on blood though they're not bad - these considerate vamps go to blood banks to get their fix.

Similarities with other vampire novels featured in this article:

The vamps in House of Night are out and proud, like those featured in the Sookie Stackhouse novels.

Differences:
P.C. and Kristin Cast's characters become 'vampyres' as a result of an abnormal DNA strand, not by being bitten.
