The Vampire Diaries: Katherine vs Elena
The resemblance is eerie, but there are a whole lot of differences between Elena and Katherine. We compare the two and ask the important questions like, who would win in a fight?

Elena Gilbert is your average American teenage girl, dealing with a far from average life. She discovers her boyfriend is a vampire, then that she's adopted and her biological mother is also a vampire and to top it off, there's a 500 year old vampire walking around who looks just like her! Given her history and the craziness of life in Mystic Falls, Elena is as down to earth as it's possible to be. She's stubborn and feisty yet sweet and very caring towards those she close to her.
History:
Elena was born in 1992 to John Gilbert and to a 16 year old teenage girl named Isobel Flemming, who fled after giving birth. Grayson and Miranda Gilbert, John's older brother and sister-in-law, adopted the baby.
After losing her adopted parents in a fatal car accident, young and beautiful Elena Gilbert finds herself caught between the affections of two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore. Elena's striking resemblance to Katherine, a vampire from 1864, causes her to question her own past.

On the surface, Katherine appears to be truly evil as she manipulates, lies and is just plain nasty to everyone. She plays on her beauty and air of innocence to get her own way. She confessed that she does actually love Stefan though her absence since she faked her own death in 1864 seems to suggest otherwise.
History
Katherine's history before meeting the Salvatore Brothers is still unclear though the writers have implied we'll learn more and more about Katherine's past as series two progresses.
Katherine met Stefan and Damon Salvatore in 1864, near the end of the American Civil War, when she was staying at their home in Mystic Falls. She claimed to be an orphan who had lost her parents in a fire, and took her handmaiden Emily Bennett with her.
She compelled Stefan to drink her blood, and Damon did it willingly and they got shot while trying to save her from being taken to the tomb to be destroyed. She revealed to Stefan that George Lockwood helped her escape and she betrayed the other tomb vampires to fake her own death.
How to tell them apart:
Katherine and Elena appear identical but the easiest way to tell them apart is via their style. Katherine's long brown hair is naturally wavy, while Elena wears her hair poker straight.
Katherine usually wears tight skinny jeans with boots while
Elena is much more casual in bootcut jeans with singlets and
cardigans.
Katherine's "big tacky" daywalker ring should also give it
away.
Why do they look identical?
We have yet to find out the answer to that question but we do know that Katherine and Elena are somehow distantly related.
Isobel's assistant Vanessa told Elena that -" Doppelgängers usually torment the people they look like," and Katherine seems to have taken it upon herself to torment Elena.
Most importantly who would win in a fight?
Clearly, Katherine has the upper hand as a 500 year old vampire
and as she says, she could kill Elena in a heartbeat.
But...
Elena has a lot of friends and family of the supernatural variety, plus she's so darn nice. Since Katherine is evil and unpopular with everyone, if Elena and her friends ganged together to battle Katherine, we think they would have a chance of taking this evil vampire on!
