The New Zealand women's tennis team has finished third overall in the Federation Cup's Asia/Oceania Group II in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The team beat the Philippines in a playoff for third and fourth position in the 11-team competition.

Abigail Guthrie and Emily Fanning both won their singles matches in straight sets to give the Kiwi side an unbeatable 2-0 victory. The doubles was not played.

The Kiwi team seemed on track for promotion back to Asia/Oceania Group I, but was hampered when it lost world No 74 Marina Erakovic, who returned to New Zealand with a thumb injury after she falling at the tournament hotel.

Indonesia earned promotion by beating Hong Kong China to win the group.

New Zealand beat Philippines 2-0

Abigail Guthrie beat Anna Patrimonio 6-3 6-0

Emily Fanning beatt Marinel Rudas 6-3 6-4.
