New Zealand tennis number two Sacha Jones has continued her good run of form by winning her semifinal match at the ITF $34,000 Challenger in Mt Gambier, South Australia.
Jones, who has a current WTA world ranking of 284, beat top seed and 149th ranked Yurika Sema of Japan 6-3 6-4 on Saturday afternoon to make the final.
Jones will now face the tournament wildcard Alicia Molik, an
Australian legend (once a world top 10 player) on the comeback
trail.
Two weeks ago, however, Jones defeated Molik on her way to winning
another ITF Tournament in Darwin - her second ITF title after
winning in Brownsville Texas earlier this year.
The Aucklander, who will be aiming for a wildcard into January's ASB Classic, has another $34,000 tournament in South Australia next week.
Other Kiwis are also suceeding on the world stage.
In Bangkok, Thailand, Rubin 'Jose' Statham has already claimed
the doubles title with partner Roman Jebavy from the Czech
Republic. They defeated a Hungarian pair Kornel Bardoczky and
Adam Kellner in straight sets 6-4 6-4.
Statham and Jebavy are looking at further honours, as they will now
meet in the singles final, after the top seed New Zealander
disposed of seventh seed Bardoczky 6-2 6-7(3) 6-2, and Jebavy
defeated second seed Kellner, in their semi-final matches.
In Pune, India, New Zealand's top male player, and tournament top
seed Dan King-Turner has reached the singles semi-final, where he
will play fourth seed Young-Jun Kim from Korea.
The other semi-finalists are sixth seed Rohan Gajjar from India,
and second seed Alexander Satschko of Germany.
