Kiwi tennis ace Marina Erakovic needed two hours to overcome Briton Laura Robson and progress to the third round at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, a grasscourt lead-up tournament to Wimbldeon.

The NZ ninth seed, ranked 46th in the world, prevailed 6-4 3-6 6-4 in a tight struggle over her 114th-ranked teenage opponent.

The result sets up a match against Russian Ekaterina Makarova, ranked eight spots lower than Erakovic, but seeded a place higher for this tournament.

Makarova needed straight sets to overcome Kazakstan's Sesil Karatancheva 7-6(4) 6-3 in their second-round encounter.
